| This book presents a very novel theory of developmental biology from the view point of an evolutionary biologist. Not only that, it is also from the view point of a neuroscientist...in other words, there are a lot of disciplines used in this book to argue an important point. Epigenetics is not solely chromatin remodeling or microRNA. Development of the fetus in this case may be influenced not only by purist epigenetics, but also by neuronal responses within the developing fetus and its micro-environment. Because stem cells are such rudimentary cells (if you look at micrographs they are mostly nucleus), this book does present an interesting alternative to explainations of development based solely on signal transduction networks.

However, sadly, there is little primary literature to support the assumptions in this book. I think that presenting a hypothesis which could be tested is important. This book meshes many disciplines, but does not unify them into a clear hypothesis. Experimentally these questions may be difficult to address, but I think they are worth asking.

If you purchase the book, I would not dismiss what it has to say. However we are lacking here in primary literature to directly support this amalgamated theory, however fascinating it is...I give it 4 stars just because it is so novel. However it falls short on direct evidence. |
